Carlos Sainz: From Madrid to Williams Racing
Carlos Sainz has built one of the most interesting careers in modern Formula 1. Born in Madrid, Spain, in 1994, Sainz entered Formula 1 in 2015 with Toro Rosso before racing for Renault, McLaren, Ferrari and eventually Williams. Today, he races for Williams with car number 55.
His career has been defined by consistency, race intelligence and a willingness to take on new challenges. For Formula 1 fans, his journey represents the evolution of a driver who has competed for some of the sport's most historic teams.
The Beginning of Carlos Sainz's F1 Journey
Sainz made his Formula 1 debut alongside Max Verstappen at Toro Rosso in 2015. His early performances demonstrated his ability to compete in a highly competitive environment, and his career soon moved through several major Formula 1 teams.
After Toro Rosso, Sainz raced for Renault before joining McLaren. It was with McLaren that he achieved his first Formula 1 podiums, establishing himself as a regular points contender.
The Ferrari Chapter
In 2021, Carlos Sainz joined Ferrari, one of the most famous names in Formula 1. During his Ferrari career, he secured his first Grand Prix victories and added multiple podium finishes to his record. His four Grand Prix wins remain an important part of his Formula 1 career.
His time at Ferrari also gave him experience competing at the front of the Formula 1 field and racing alongside Charles Leclerc.
A New Challenge at Williams
Sainz joined Williams for the 2025 season, partnering Alexander Albon. His first year with the Grove-based team produced two Grand Prix podiums, including third place at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and Qatar Grand Prix. Williams finished fifth in the 2025 Constructors' Championship.
The move marked an important new chapter: instead of joining an established front-running team, Sainz became part of Williams' longer-term rebuilding project.
Carlos Sainz and the Williams 2026 Era
For 2026, Williams continued with the same driver pairing of Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon. The team also introduced the FW48, powered by Mercedes, as Formula 1 entered a major new technical era.
The 2026 season has presented different challenges for Williams, with Sainz recording points finishes in China, Miami and Canada among the season's results so far.
Despite the difficult start, Sainz committed his future to Williams in August 2026, signing a new multi-year contract with the team.
