Cadillac F1: The Story of America’s New Formula 1 Team

Cadillac Becomes F1's 11th Team

Cadillac officially entered Formula 1 in 2026, becoming the first new team to join the grid since Haas in 2016.

The team operates from Silverstone, one of the most important locations in British motorsport.

Its first Formula 1 chassis is called the MAC-26, and its debut power unit is supplied by Ferrari.

Sergio Pérez #11

One of Cadillac's two race drivers is Sergio Pérez.

The Mexican driver brings extensive Formula 1 experience to the new team. Pérez made his F1 debut in 2011 and has recorded six Grand Prix victories and 39 podium finishes during his career. His best championship result came in 2023, when he finished second in the Drivers' Championship.

Pérez returned to the Formula 1 grid in 2026 after spending 2025 away from a full-time race seat.

His Cadillac carries the familiar #11, creating a new chapter in the Mexican driver's career.

Valtteri Bottas #77

Alongside Pérez is Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas.

Bottas entered Formula 1 with Williams in 2013 and later became a key part of Mercedes' championship-winning era. He has recorded 10 Grand Prix victories, 67 podiums and 20 pole positions, with his best Drivers' Championship result being second in 2019 and 2020.

After leaving Kick Sauber at the end of 2024 and serving as a Mercedes reserve driver in 2025, Bottas returned to the grid with Cadillac for 2026.

His Cadillac carries #77.

An Experienced Driver Line-Up

Although Cadillac is a new Formula 1 team, its first driver pairing has extensive F1 experience.

According to Formula 1's 2026 team preview, Bottas and Pérez brought a combined 16 Grand Prix victories and more than 500 race starts to Cadillac's debut project.

Their experience is particularly relevant to a new organisation developing its first F1 car and establishing its race operations.

The Cadillac MAC-26

The MAC-26 is Cadillac's first Formula 1 chassis.

For the 2026 season, Ferrari supplies Cadillac with its power unit and gearbox. General Motors is simultaneously developing its own F1 power-unit programme.

The FIA approved GM Performance Power Units LLC as an F1 power-unit supplier beginning in 2029, with development and testing already underway.

This creates a clear technical progression for the Cadillac project: Ferrari power during its initial F1 campaign, followed by a planned transition toward a GM-built power unit.

Building an American F1 Power Unit

General Motors established GM Performance Power Units LLC to develop the future Cadillac F1 powertrain.

The programme is being led by Russ O'Blenes, who previously worked on GM's motorsport propulsion programmes. The company has also established facilities in the United States while developing its Formula 1 engine technology.

The planned GM power unit is an important part of Cadillac's longer-term Formula 1 project.

Cadillac's 2026 F1 Season

Cadillac's first season has been a learning period for the new organisation.

After 14 Grands Prix, Formula 1 lists Cadillac 11th in the Constructors' Championship with 0 points. The team's highest race finish is P13, and it has recorded 11 DNFs.

The team has continued developing its technical organisation during the season. In September 2026, Formula 1 reported that Cadillac was bringing in technical leaders from Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes as part of its longer-term development programme. Marcin Budkowski had also taken over the Team Principal role from Graeme Lowdon.

Zhou Guanyu and Colton Herta

Cadillac's wider driver programme includes Zhou Guanyu as reserve driver and Colton Herta as test driver.

Zhou brings previous F1 experience from his time with Alfa Romeo/Kick Sauber and joined Cadillac as reserve driver ahead of its debut season.

Herta, meanwhile, joined as Cadillac's first announced test driver after building his career in American motorsport, including IndyCar and IMSA competition.

This gives Cadillac a broader driver structure beyond its two full-time race drivers.
